Indiana University's: Plagiarism: What It is and How to Recognize and Avoid It

Below is the East High English Department's Plagiarism Policy.  Punishment will be more severe in my classes, with the possibility of failing the course on the first offense. We will thoroughly discuss how to conduct proper research and correct citation in class.

Plagiarism Policy for Lincoln East High School English Department

2006-2007

Plagiarism Defined

Using someone else’s exact words or ideas, or phrasing and representing those words or ideas as your own is a serious offense known as plagiarism.  It is a crime of theft.  “Ideas or phrasing” includes written or spoken material, from whole papers and paragraphs, to sentences and phrases—but it also includes statistics, lab results, artwork, etc.  “Someone else” can mean a professional source, such as a published writer or critic in a book, magazine, encyclopedia, or journal; an electronic resource such as material discovered on the World Wide Web; another student, friend or family member at this school or anywhere else; a paper-writing “service” (online or otherwise) that offers to sell papers for a fee or a free service.

This was adapted from Benson High School’s Plagiarism Policy (Student Handbook), which, in turn, was adapted from Guide to Writing Research Papers, MLA(http://webster.Commnet.edu/mla.plagiarism.shtml)

East High School Policy

East High School’s English Department recognizes the seriousness of plagiarism,

especially now that Internet resources are readily available to students.  Therefore,

the Department states the following policy:

First offense: as determined by the student’s English teacher, a student who has

plagiarized will receive a zero on the assignment that will be converted to an “F”

when the student has redone the assignment.  All students who plagiarize must

redo the assignment within a timeframe stated by the teacher.  The teacher will

also contact the student’s parents/guardians and inform them of the infraction plus

information about the seriousness of plagiarism.

Second offense: as determined by the student’s English teacher, a student who

plagiarizes a second time must redo the assignment, but will receive no credit for

it.  If the student does not redo the assignment, he/she will fail the class.  The

teacher will contact an administrator and the student’s parents/guardians.

Third offense: as determined by the student’s English teacher, a student who

plagiarizes a third time will fail the class.  The teacher will contact an

administrator and the student’s parents/guardians.

Procedure

This plagiarism policy will be given out to all students at the beginning of each

English class and will be communicated to parents/guardians through newsletters

each semester.

Also, the one-through-three infractions are related to one class, if it becomes

known that a student has plagiarized in another English class, then the student’s

work will be considered a second or third infraction and will be dealt with in

accordance to the policy cited above.
