What your child is learning in 2nd Grade

        Reading

Second graders do a lot of reading everyday.  We have small group reading, whole group, BIRD  Time (Be Independent Readers Daily), and opportunities throughout the day to explore books. Please encourage your child to read at home also.  Just a few minutes a day can greatly increase reading accuracy.

We have finished our first theme and we are now reading stories about nature in Theme 2: Nature Walk.  Over fall break, or an evening, or weekend, take a nature walk with your chid and see what you can find.  See if there is anything that you can find that is in a familar story.  After Thanksgiving we will start Theme 3.

Remember those important questions while reading: Who are the characters?  What is the setting?  What is the problem and solution in the story?  These are basic story comprehension questions that are important when reading a story.

        Spelling for Theme 2-3

Spelling lists will come home in Wednesday folders.  Tests will take place the following Tuesday.  Please practice words at home using pen/paper, magnet letters, stamps/ink, playdough, or any other creative medium you can create!

     Math

Math is one of my favorite subjects!  We start off the year with basic addition and subtraction problems.  By the end of the quarter we will have finished five chapters!!!  We will be working hard on those basic math facts throughout the year.  As we start into second quarter, we will be looking at shapes, fractions, and regrouping in addition and subtraction.

We do a lot of math vocabulary words, to familiarize students with story problem language.  What does it mean when it says, "how many more?"  or "how many are there altogether?"

Daily "homework" should be practicing basic math facts through 20.  Also, skip counting everyday will be a huge help when we get into multiplication and division.  Just 5-10 minutes a day can make a huge difference in success at school!

Writing and Handwriting

I am very excited that Lincoln Public Schools is implementing a new writing program this year.  I will update you as much as I can about new ideas and strategies for writing.  We are still working on procedural things right now, but we have written everyday since the first day of school.  Students are encouraged to write personal narratives, which are stories about them.  Now that we are in second quarter, please start encouraging your child to add in more description to their stories.  Encourage your student to write at home.  Make sure to use capitals, punctuation, and spacing.

First semester we review basic formations of all printed letters. Then in second semester, we start in on the cursive lowercase letters.  I encourage you to NOT let your child begin writing in cursive until all the letters have been learned.

             Correlated Curriculum

Correlated Curriculum consists of our Social Studies, Science, Health, and Character Education topics.

This is an exciting year for second grade.  Each child will get to see all three second grade teachers for correlated.  Mrs. Fujan is teaching Science.  Mrs. Baumeister is teaching Social Studies.  And Mrs. Lewallen is teaching Health, Character, and BIST skills. First quarter topics are being finished up and 2nd quarter topics will start after Fall Break.

Science:  Our 2nd quarter Science topic is Matter.  We will be exploring the differences between solids, liquids, and gases.  Several Science experiments will help us do the investigations.

Social Studies:  The topic for Social Studies is "We the Workers."  Students will be learning about how does our community work and who works here.

Health:  In Health, students will be learning about Healthy Bodies.  Students will also think about how to make positive decisions and review other aspects of health and character development.
