Student IDs
Student IDs are required at North Star. You will be expected to have your ID on when you enter the classroom.
Passes/Leaving Class
It is essential for students to be in class every period. However, Ms. Malcolm has the discretion to issue passes to students during the class period. The handbook will serve as a hall pass. A pass will not be written if you do not have your handbook with you.
Tardy Policy
The expectation for students is to be in the classroom when the bell rings. When students are late to class it diminishes effective instruction and time on task. A student will be considered tardy if she/he is not in the classroom at the designated start time. Students tardy to class will result in a 30 minute detention after school that day. If a student does not attend detention the day that the tardy occurred she/he will be reminded and be required to attend the next day. If the student does not attend the second day they will be suspended from school for a day for non compliance.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones must be off and out of sight during class time. Students are responsible for their own phone at all times, even if it is taken from someone they have loaned it to.
If the cell phone is used to make or receive calls (including text messaging) during class, the following steps will be taken:
First offense: Cell phone will be taken by the teacher and turned into campus security in an envelope stating: Student name, Teacher Name, Period, Date. A phone call home will be made by the teacher. The student may pick up the cell phone after school that day in the security office.
Second offense: Cell phone will be taken by the teacher and turned into campus security. Parent must pick up cell phone and sign in a notebook.
Third offense: Cell phone will remain in campus security office until the end of the semester. At that time it will be released to the student.
Electronic Musical Devices (IPods, MP3, CD Players, etc) Policy
Ms. Malcolm strongly discourage students from bringing electronic music devices to school due to possible damage, theft or loss of the items. North Star High School is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen or damage.
Electronic Musical devices must be off and out of sight during class time. Students are responsible for their own musical device at all times, even if it is taken from someone they have loaned it to.
If the electronic musical device is used during class, the following steps will be taken:
First Offense: Electronic musical device will be taken by the teacher and turned into campus security in an envelope stating: Student name, Teacher Name, Period, Date. A phone call home will be made by the teacher. The student may pick up the musical device after school that day in the security office.
Second Offense: Electronic musical device will be taken by the teacher and turned into campus security. Parent must pick up musical device and sign in a notebook.
Third offense: Electronic musical device will remain in campus security office until the end of the semester. At that time it will be released to the student.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is vital to student success. Little can be accomplished when the student is not in school. We understand there are issues that affect school attendance and/or tardiness. However, regular attendance at school is vital to learning and an important value for young people to acquire. Students who are frequently absent usually do not do well in school.
All students will be expected to have regular attendance in this class. Regular attendance is a key element for success in Computer Applications. When a student accumulates a total of 15 absences, excused or unexcused, the student will be notified that credit will not be given and to encourage the student to appeal that decision. Absences due to school activities are not counted toward the total.
Truancy Policy
Truancies are unexcused absences during the school day. Parents/ guardians have 48 hours to excuse an absence. If this is not done, the result is a truancy. A truancy letter is sent to the parent/guardian, notifying of 3, or 5, or 10 truancies. Failure notice is sent to parent/guardian, NO CREDIT for quarter classes with 5 truancies. For semester classes the NO CREDIT letter will be sent after the 10th truancy.
Students can appeal for credit by providing documentation and improving attendance.
Anti-Bullying Policy
Lincoln Public Schools provides physically safe and emotionally secure environments for all students and staff. Positive behaviors (non-violence, cooperation, teamwork, understanding and acceptance of others) are encouraged in the educational program and are required of all staff. Strategies and practices are implemented to reinforce positive behaviors and to discourage and protect others from inappropriate behaviors.
