Reader's Marque was created to provide a personal reading structure that promotes discussion, and home- to -teacher, home-to-student, student-to-teacher, and student-to-student connections. It incorporates a high level of independence and encourages free selection of books that students and adults are already reading. It also provides a litmus test of the students abilitity to select appropriate books, and ,if desired, a consistant method of holding students accountable for independent reading which fits our districts independent workshop guidelines.
Using the Marque, sponsors can quickly see a sampling of a the variety in each student's independent reading selection, and the results from tests taken enabling te sponsor to evaluate the student's ability to select appropriate books. WHile a percent is given a the end of each test, the sponsor sets the expectation. This allows for scaling, as well as interpretation consistant with accommodations made for students with special needs.
Books are selected for Reader's Marque by requests from students, and teachers. Golden Sowers will be added this year.
Questions prompt discussion about the books, and provoke further exploration. High Level questions require making an inference, recognizing generalizations, and drawing conclussions.
Results are immediate and with no restrictions on redos, students have fun rereading to get a better score. Scores are dated so sponsors can easily see progress, and determine own expectations.
After reading a book on the list, students have gone on to find other books by the same author, or on the same topic
