Late Work Policy

Students who are most successful in English 10D are the ones with the ability to meet deadlines . I try to give you time to work on writing assignment in class .  However, computer lab time is limited, so in many cases, you will have to finish your writing at home.  There is rarely good reason to turn in late work.  If you feeel you have a good reason for not getting your work in on time, please talk to me ahead of time, and I will consider giving you an extension.  Sports and/or work are not good reasons.

The English Department's late policy states that work is expecked to be submitted on time.  Satisfactorily completed assignments not submitted will earn at least a passing grade.  The student's grading record will remain open until the end of the grading period or the end of the unit of study.  The teacher will announce specific dates.

New this year is a no zero policy.  What this means is that I expect every student to complete each assignment.  If a student does not hand in an assignment, he/she will be expected to stay after school that afternoon or sometime the next day to work with me to complete the assignment.  Failure to do so will result in a referral to the administration.  It is your

Late Work Policy

All assignments are expected to be turned in on time (at the beginning of the class).  If you fail to turn in your assignments on time, you risk falling behind.  It will be difficult to catch up.  All work for a unit is due at the end of that unit.  NO work will be accepted after the class has moved on to a new unit.  Final dates will be stated and posted in the room at least one week before the last date of the unit.  Some assignments are time sensitive and thus, will not be accepted late.  Those assignments will be announced as NO LATE PAPERS.

Second Semester Syllabus

This semester English 10D students will be studying Maya Angelou's autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.  We will also study some of her poetry.

We will then do a student-directed unit on short stories where students will be in groups and will be responsible for teaching a short story to the entire class. Before moving on to the next unit of study, students will complete State Standard Test 12.1.5 (Elements of Fiction) and 12.1.4 (Theme).

During this semester, students will research a topic and write a research paper, learning how to utilize many research tools including on-line resources and Noodle Tools.

The final unit of study for the semester is "Much Ado About Nothing", a Shakespeare comedy.  This play will be read aloud in class to allow the students to enjoy the work in its orignal form.

In addition to these major units of study, students are required to read a novel of their choice each quarter. Students may select from a list provided by the teacher.  It is the student's responsibility to obtain the book and read it outside of class.  The novel is to be completed by the end quarter.  Each student will be asked to write four (4) responses to his/her novel.  A final activity will also be required.
