Jomon Coil Pots
The ancient Japanese Jomon Culture influenced the style of coil pots. The work focused on the art element Line and the art principle Rhythm. Artists were required to create a greenware vessel between 10” and 14” in height. The pieces are made with buff clay, stained 7% red iron oxide, and fired to cone 6.

Slab Box with Lid

Continual patterns of Polynesian designs influenced the patterns on the Slab Boxes. The work focused on the art element Shape and the art principle Contrast. Artists were required to create a greenware vessel 4” in height. The design was impressed with a template made from illustration board. Lids were cut with a felting knife after the box was completed. The boxes are made with buff clay and cone 6 glazes.

Coil Vessels
Traditional vessels from Europe, America, Asia, and Africa influenced the forms of the Coil Vessels. The work focused on the art element Form and the art principle Emphasis, Rule of 1/3’s. Artists were required to create a greenware vessel 10” to 14” in height. A template of the profile was created prior to starting the vessel. The project was made with buff clay and cone 6 glazes.
