Homework policy:

It is the student's responsibility to notify the teacher when there is an absence from class or homework assignments that have been lost/misplaced.  During each unit of study (every 3-4 weeks), daily assignments will be collected and entered as a unit grade in the gradebook.  There is a final cut-off date at the end of each unit of study for turning in any missing/late work.  This date will be given in advance to students so they are aware when assignments must be turned in to receive credit.

Academic Honesty:

Plagiarism is defined as "taking words and ideas from another and passing them off as one's own."  Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty will minimally result in a conference with the teacher, possible redo of an assignment, and could jeopardize completion of a course.  Ignorance of what constitutes academic dishonesty is not an excuse.  The East High English department teaches and reviews the proper procedures for research and citations throughout your four years with us.  Examples of plagiarism include:  cutting and pasting sections from a website, copying from books and other source materials word-for-word, using the work of others as if it is yours.  If you are unsure about how you are using and citing sources, please ask!

Respect for Others:

Each of us is an individual who has his/her abilities, backgrounds, beliefs, goals, rights, and successes.  Each of us therefore deserves to be treated with respect for that individuality.  All students have the right to learn in an environment which is safe and comfortable.  It is every student's responsibility to contribute to that safe environment.  All behaviors in this classroom will be directed toward providing a comfortable environment where learning is maximized.  Any verbal behavior, clothing, or physical behavior which is directed at intimidating or insulting others based on gender, religion, ethnicity, or physical or mental abilities is unacceptable.  The consequences for unacceptable behavior range from verbal reprimand to an administrative referral.
