The Math program is published by Houghton Mifflin. The following are chapters taught and tested each quarter.

Students will be working on skip counting through twelves until mastery is demonstrated and working on weekly timed fact tests throughout the year.
Reading fifth grade text is Expeditions published by Houghton Mifflin. The six themes are “Natures’ Fury” and Tall Tales, “Give It All You’ve Got” and Poetry, “Person to Person” and Plays, “One Land, Many Trails” and Autobiography, and “Animal Encounters”.
Spelling text is Everyday Spelling published by Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley. There will be weekly pre and post tests. Check with your student about which days his/her class uses for these.
Writers’ Workshop students will be using English published by Houghton Mifflin, as we as Six Trait Writing which includes Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. Description, Personal Essay, Story, Personal Narrative, Research Report, and Persuasive Essay forms will be taught and tested within the literacy block. Our focus mode is Personal Essay.
Health units by quarter are Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs, Emotional/Family & Social Health, Nutrition, and Growth & Development.
Social Studies units taught chronologically are Indigenous First Nations, Early Explorations and European Exploration, Establishing a Nation, Growth and Change from the Revolution through the pre-Civil War era, and others as time permits.
Science units by quarter are Rocks and Minerals, Scientific Tools and Investigation, Chemistry, and Water and Wetlands.
Lincoln Public Schools expects fifth graders to have 20-4 minutes of homework each night Monday through Thursday. Obvious choices are work not finished in class, spelling word work, 20 minutes of nightly personal reading. math fact or skip counting practice.
