Bulletin Board
3rd grade Curriculum
Literacy: Houghton Mifflin
This year in Literature we will meet 20 different authors in our 6 themes of reading. The six themes are: Off to Adventure, Celebrating Traditions, Incredible Stories, Animal Habitats, Voyages, and Smart Solutions. In order to meet the authors and get a feel for the stories I have created a scavenger hunt designed to get our students leaning about the creative people who wrote the anthology selections. The link below will lead you and your student to the hunt. Enjoy!
Math: Houghton Mifflin
Houghton Mifflin really works! Here's why: It's proven with scientifically based research. It is based on more than 30 years of studies on how students learn best. It incorporates models and strategies from high performing classrooms and it meets the needs of all learners. The objectives we teach in third grade can be found on the math card.
Science: The 3rd grade Science focus is on four themes. These topics are Dinosaurs and Fossils, Energy, Embryology, and Simple Machines. Third grade will be going to Morrill Hall to learn about Dinosaurs found in Nebraska. We will also be raising chicks for our embryology unit.
I have spent some time creating lists of various websites I feel are good connections and extensions to the learning we will be doing in the classroom. There are games, reading on the topic, and even virtual tours you and your student may explore.
Social Studies: In third grade we study communities and the history of Lincoln. In the spring the students will be going on a walking tour of downtown Lincoln.
Testing Schedule:
CRT Tests -- a CRT will be given after each social studies and science unit.
MAT Test -- the MAT Test will be given between April 7th and the 18th. More information will come as we approach these dates.
Math CRT -- will be given in May.
Reading CRT -- will be given in May.
* Another fantastic resource is is located at the LPS website and connects to all curriculum areas. Go to the site, click on the left hand side the curriculum area you are interested in, then find 3rd grade. There are various websites that are great teaching tools. Have fun!
