Discipline in the Kindergarten Classroom
We use several resources to help children be successful in the classroom. First, we will follow the district’s guidelines for discipline as outlined in the student handbook. Second, we will incorporate a “Love and Logic” approach to problem solving (developed by Jim Fay) and “Think-Time” a system developed by Dr. Ron Nelson at the University to Nebraska.
We recognize that some students will need a “time-out” before they are able to problem solve a behavior issue. We will refer to these a “Turtle Time Outs”. We will help children make a connection between what a turtle does when it is scared and upset to what children need to do when they are not in a learning state. We will discuss how a turtle pulls its head, arms, and legs into its shell and is quiet. We will expect children to do this during a “Turtle Time-Out”. they should get their hands and feet safely to their side, lay their head down if needed, and have a quiet voice. We will have a “Turtle Time Out” space in our room for children to go to as needed.
Encouraging children to make responsible and safe learning choices is our ultimate goal. We appreciate your help and support as we work together throughout the school year.
