5.1  Decoding Longer Words:  The student applies strategies to solve word problems by using largest chunks known, using letters and sounds, and confirming by rereading.
5.1.1  Reads and identifies base words with inflectional endings, including –s, -es
5.1.2  Reads words that have suffixes -ward, -ous, -ive, -ic, -ly, -ness, -ment, -ful, -less, -ion, -ent, -ant, -able, -ible

5.1.4    Structural Analysis:  Uses knowledge of open and closed syllables to read

5.1.7  Structural Analysis:   Identifies and reads compound words
5.1.8  Phonetic Analysis:  Reads and spells words and syllables using knowledge of vowel and consonant spelling patterns            
5.2  Vocabulary:  The student expands vocabulary knowledge by building sight vocabulary and using word meaning strategies---finding meaning in the word, in context, in the dictionary and thesaurus.

5.3  Oral Reading Fluency:  The student reads  grade level text with 94% accuracy or better, using appropriate expression, phrasing, and a rate of 118-151 words per minute.
5.4  Comprehension Strategies:  The student actively selects strategies before, during, and after reading to achieve reading proficiency.
5.4.1 Using Background Knowledge--makes connections between personal experiences that relate to the text, world knowledge that relates to the text, knowledge of text elements, knowledge about the author’s style, and knowledge of other related texts to deepen meaning
5.4.2 Predict/Infer--Actively predicts and infers while reading and confirms or revises predictions as the author’s meaning unfolds
a.  Anticipates story events to establish a possible sequence of events or focus on  possible solutions to problems  
b.  Predicts based on conclusions drawn about the character
5.4.3  Monitor/Clarify--Monitors for understanding and clarifies using fix-up strategies
a.  Categorizes and classifies information from text
b.  Clarifies information by rereading text and using photos
c.  Monitors to identify main ideas, pausing to identify the topic, main ideas, and key details of a selection
5.4.4  Question--Formulates questions that demonstrate understanding of details,  important ideas, and author’s viewpoint about the topic
