Dawes Days Numbered???

By Mackenzie Hyde (Grade 6)

Have you heard the discussion that Dawes may close?  How do you feel about this discussion?  Here are some student and staff opinions about this topic.  I intereviewed a Dawes student – this is how she feels.

“I dislike the idea of Dawes closing because they did a bunch of remodeling for middle school ues.  It would be a waste of money to close it down.”

Another student told me what she thought about it too, “I think it isn’t a good idea because all the Dawes staff will have to be separated from their fellow employees.  Also because students here love Dawes.  I wish they’d keep it as a middle school.”

I also asked Mr. Knudsen how he felt about this discussion of Dawes closing. This is what he said. “I hope that we can keep Dawes open and that we can continue to offer an equal program as the other middle schools.”

If Dawes closes it will be repurposed.  Kids from the Arnold and Fredstrom area would go to the new middle school in Fallbrook’s neighborhood which is to be called Schoo Middle School.  This school will open in 2009.  Students not in those areas would choose either Culler or Mickle for the middle schools for 2009-2010 school year.

If Dawes doesn’t close it would still be a GREAT middle school to learn and be a part of.

WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN TO   DAWES   by   JULIA SANFORD:

You probably have heard about Dawes repurposing or the idea to transfer Goodrich kids here while they make Goodrich bigger.  The school board has been talking about several possibilities.  On Tuesday they talked about this new idea to make Dawes bigger by transferring Goodrich students to Dawes while they make Goodrich bigger and remodel it for the future.  This says that Dawes will stay open at least 4 more years. I was at a meeting at Dawes back in September.  Lots of people were unhappy with any plan changing Dawes.  At the other meetings people spoke about not voting next term for them (school board members), that probably made them fear about their terms left to be in control. Many people also said, they would have never voted for them.  People around the city are worried about how this will effect them.  The council

Can I go to the Nurse?

By Jesse Wolfe (7th grade)

Hi, I’m Jesse Wolfe and I’ve interviewed nurse Marcia Jones. Have you ever wondered how many people have been sent to the nurse since school started?  After talking with Nurse Jones I found out the answer to this question and more.  Around 500 students have gone to see the nurse and only 16 have been sent home since school began.

Our school nurse Mrs. Jones says the reasons for these absences and visits is that there is a virus going around and also because of the weird weather. She also says to avoid crowds and wash your hands.

Introducing our Costa Rican Correspondent- The Wolfeman

By Alex Wolfe, the “Wolfeman” – Grade 7

Hi I’m Alex from Costa Rica.  It is in the middle of Central America.  We’re here because my mom is on sabbatical from NWU.

We are living in Ciudad Colón, a name that means City of Columbus.  It is a small town as towns go, only 10,000 people. We don’t actually live in town though.  We live on a small farm about 1 kilometer from town.  That (for math teachers) is .62137119 of a mile.

It is an easy 10 minute walk, 15 with heavy groceries.  The people in town are nice and make an effort to understand our muy pequeño español.

It rains every day here always from about 1 to dark. Dark actually is about 6:00 here!

So far we have visited…

*San Jose, where we wandered around and saw some cool museums including the jade museum,

*Jacó (don’t be like the guy on the bus that pronounced it haw-ko you have to hiss the J), where we swam in the ocean, and Puriscal.

*In Puriscal I got to meet with some other English speaking kids.

The best so far has been Jacó because it was a beach with HUGE waves.

Another cool thing is the Sábado Mercado, or the Saturday Market. We can get a week’s worth of fruit and vegetables for super cheap!

One big difference is that when you ask someone here a question you will always get an answer. Always. Even if they know nothing about the subject they try and help.

Also there is no baseball here. That would be the thing that I miss most about life in the states.

That’s it for now, next time I will tell you about all the bugs.  Well not all, that would take about the rest of the school year, but some of the big ones anyway.

Dear Bently,

The Dawes school dog is here to answer all of your problems.  J

By… Bentley James (with help from Journey Laws  6 and Juan Alarcon 6)

Dear Bently-

I’m having a serious problem .My owners daughter has to live in my home. The bad thing is she’s Allergic to my species. Cats. So now instead of living on the cozy, warm, couch I live in the cold basement. My owners daughter is nice and caring but when ever I get two inches or closer she sneezes and coughs all over me. I think I even lost 2 lives she sneezed so much!! My owner is thinking of shaving me!! I need your help trying to figure out how to avoid losing my hair!!!    Sincerely,

 Your pal your buddy,

Mister the cat

Dear Mister,

I have an idea for you. Maybe you could ask your owner if she could help make the basement more comfortable for you. You could try to stay in the basement and maybe suggest that her daughter get some allergies medicine and that you could only go upstairs when the daughter is gone, but try not to go upstairs to much so that you don’t get hair everywhere!

Well,hope that helped!!

Thanks for sending me your letter!!

 Your good friend,

 Bentley
