Randolph School’s End of the Week Notes for September 28, 2007
Condolences
Our condolences to Gayle Wiedman on the loss of her uncle last week, and to Michelle Kulas on the loss of her grandfather on Monday. We keep these friends and their families in our thoughts and prayers.
Congratulations!
Chris Haeffner’s Fund A Need request through the Foundation for LPS to buy audio books for upper grade students has been funded! Watch for this innovative way to hook reluctant readers, and watch for Chris to submit another request for additional titles! What do you need for your students that we could write a Fund A Need request to get funded?
Curriculum and Instruction
Mr. Scofield, Band Instructor, will be at Parent Teacher Conferences on Thur. Oct. 11, from 4-6 p.m. at a table in the gym.
Staff Reminders:
Copying: Walk up copies at the MFD is the most expensive way to make copies. Whenever possible, please send your copy requests to the print shop; combine with others getting the same copies; or scan pages in to send to the print shop. Thank you.
United Way envelopes: Please return the “confidential” envelopes to the office by Wed., Oct. 3 whether you contribute or not. (There is a collection point behind Vicki’s desk.) On behalf of the many Randolph children and families served by the agencies in the combined giving campaign, THANK YOU!
Fast Friends
Next week’s fast friend is Kelly Johnson.
“She handled my son’s concern with love and care. I am so impressed by your teachers.”
Vicki and Marcell, Your positive way of helping, interacting and problem solving is such a BLESSING! Kjj
Susie, Thanks for helping out with kids when they are struggling with difficult issues. You’re great at assisting kids, families, staff. kjj
Marcelll, Thank you for making the “hard” phone calls so graciously.
Trish, Thank for your “tech” support and for helping with software issues. Your demeanor with kids is calm, consistent, and supportive. Kj
Jeanie, Thank you for agreeing to share “Ways to Assess” pointers with Gayle. Wb
Nicole, I appreciate you agreeing to meet with and incorporate into your PE curriculum a community group’s “staying active” message. Also, GREAT work promoting the Pumpkin Run! I’m looking forward to a huge Randolph group! W
Staff Development
“The world, the human world, is bound together not by protons and electrons, but by stories. Nothing has meaning in itself: all the objects in the world would be shards of bare mute blankness, spinning wildly out of orbit, if we didn’t bind them together with stories.” Brian Morton, Starting Out in the Evening
These words sum up the value of listening to former National Teacher of the Year, Guy Doud, at Monday’s multi-school staff meeting. Through stories of his childhood, and those of his students, Mr. Doud touched on the mission that called each of us to teaching and lives of service. Sharing the power of stories, the richness of experiences, binds us together in our work with children and for the future. “Long after they’ve forgotten what you taught them, students remember how you made them feel.” Guy Doud
Student Information
Is your child interested in learning Karate, but you can’t afford lessons over a long term commitment? Check out the LPS scholarship application at the end of these notes. One scholarship is available in LPS for each quarter of the school year.
For Your Information
Staff Directory information is available for updating by logging into the LPS website, then Information Contact for Employees (in the left hand column). I tried it Tuesday night, and the process of verifying my own information for the (online) LPS staff directory was quick and easy. Remember: this is the system by which LPS will contact employees with emergency and other messages, so you’ll want your information to be accurate!

Boundary Changes in LPS
The Lincoln Board of Education has been discussing new school attendance boundaries that could affect many schools within the school district. Although final action has not been taken on these boundary adjustments, it is important that parents be aware of the proposed changes. The LPS web site (www.lps.org) has maps of the school district with the proposed boundaries for public viewing. In addition, copies of the proposed boundary map are available for review in each elementary school office. Parents are welcome to visit and review the maps.
