Curriculum and Instruction

1.  Curriculum Night is Tuesday, September 11 from 6:00 -7:30 p.m.  All parents need to attend this important opportunity to learn about the expectations for children in each grade level.  Teachers will present information and activities about mathematics, reading, writing, science, social studies, health, and other learning.  Teachers and parents will review the behavior expectations for each grade.  The Art, PE, Music, and Computer teachers will present special sessions to describe what children will learn in each of their areas.  The Media Specialist and Counselor will also have lots of learning to share with parents.  This is an adult event.  No child care will be available.  Teachers will repeat their sessions:  6:00-6:45 and again 6:45-7:30 p.m.

2.  The Great Pumpkin Run is coming!  Our PE teacher, Mrs. VonKaenel, is talking about it in PE  classes and will hand out the registrations to students.  She will collect registrations and then pickup the packets and t-shirts for students. She indicated that on the registration form for parents to see.  Mrs. V. and students will also be "training" in PE for the Saturday, October 6th event.  Watch for your child’s registration form!

Meetings Held This Week

PTA held its first meeting on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the gym.  President Kelly Jack reviewed the reasons for PTA and the benefits of parent involvement for children.  She explained the variety of committees who carry out the work of the PTA, and asked for volunteers to lead Membership, Cultural Arts, Safety, Magazine Sales, Spring Fundraiser, Grounds, and Education.  Volunteers stepped up for Membership (Jill Brown & Sarah Herron), Cultural Arts (Erica Birky-Rios), and Education.  The minutes from the May meeting and the Treasurer’s Report were approved.  The Principal and staff members delivered brief reports on activities. Trish Olderbak presented information on joining Girl Scouts.  The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.  Child care was provided.  The next PTA meeting is Tuesday, October 2.  The theme is Safe Children.  There will be speakers for parents, as well as speakers and activities for the children.

The Technology Planning Committee met on Thursday, September 6, 2007 in the Media Center to review goals for hardware, software, and staff training.  Members present were:  Lisa, Jean, Jan, Kristin C., Patrick, Chris H., Susie, Trish, and Wendy.  (Laura attended a SAT at that time.) An inventory of all technology equipment will be conducted over the next two weeks.  Lisa Carpenter will develop the form and the committee will ask every teacher to list the quantity and serial number (if present) on computers, printers, televisions, tape/CD players/recorders, VCRs, DVD players, and overhead projectors. Vicki will collate the information.  Trish and Chris will assist Lisa by making sure all their technology are listed on the form. This inventory will help the Technology Planning Committee know which items we need to attain, and which are obsolete.  Complete notes from the meeting were emailed to each member to share with their team/program.
